Welcome to My Free Warhammer RvR Guide. I have been playing Warhammer Online continuously since early beta, clocking up day after day of game time on a multitude of characters since then. This has given me an extensive insight into Warhammer RvR, tactics and strategies. My fellow WAR comrades have harrassed, nagged and downright pestered me into sharing my expansive knowledge with any and all Warhammer players I can reach.  I eventually broke (more like forced:P) to share my tips, tactics and strategies for ORvR, Keep and Fortress Sieges, defending and positioning here. Use these strategies to make you and your realms Warhammer RvR experience epic, successful and enjoyable.

I will continue to add and update this guide with new tactics and anything neat I discover. Please share your own views, tips and strategies in the comments section at the bottom.

Simple Rules:

  • Keep your groups balanced with the correct classes (if you’re unsure go with 2 tanks, 2 dps and 2 healers but try to mix the tank and healer classes for buffs etc).
  • Stay close to your party and warband.
  • Always assess your surroundings and landscape.
  • You should be constantly looking for any small positional advantages you can gain. Look for trees, rocks, water falls, bridges, bushes etc. Try to use these for camouflage, to gain a height advantage, set choke points or ambush locations. you will even find little spots where the enemy cannot see you but you can see, and attack them. (I will share some of my favourites later on)
  • Communicate with other players and warbands often, effectively and clearly (give location, numbers and heading where possible).
  • Do not shout out random orders if you are not leader or assistant, you will confuse and split the warband. Talk to the leader or assistant direct first.
  • Keep region chat clear for scouts and announcements.
  • Keep your eye on region and warband chat, you may miss important orders
  • Above all listen and follow your warband leader. Stick to him like glue unless specifically told not to. If you want to do something else like scenario or go your own path, for everyones sake please leave the warband as you are limiting its effectiveness.

  • HIT THE HEALERS – Yes, that means YOU; Melee DPS, Tanks and Ranged DPS, For heaveans sake hit their back line
  • FOCUSED DPS is a must! HIT THE SAME TARGET (but please don’t hit the tanks). Far too often dps are spread between targets (people still do it at max level) STOP!
  • AoE (area of effect) heals are not line of sight based (meaning you can still use them on your group through walls, floors and scenery)
  • If anyone is shouting for a REZ you can right click on their name in chat tab and target them from there (saves a lot of time looking all over for dead people)
  • TANKS please make sure you guard the squishes (unless you have other orders of course)
  • Always look at the landscape and surroundings, many battlefield objectives have trees, statues and rocks that can be climbed to give you unprecedented advantage over your foes.

WAR Empire SymbolUpgrading Keeps

If you can afford to get the keep to Rank 5+ it should be able to hold all but the most aggressive attacks long enough for reinforcements to arrive.

If your guild is poor and you can’t afford the pricey upgrades try to get another guild to claim the keep, you can relinquish claim of any keep but the Domination Point timer will restart.

If there isn’t another guild available ensure you get the essential upgrades.

Bloody SunEssential Upgrades:

  • DeadBolt (stops any RR45 enemy picking the keep doors and ninja-ing the keep)
  • Increased Door Health and Resistance

Basically anything that will slow their progress to your Keep Lord is worth a look. For example upgrading the guards to champions, and decreasing their re-spawn rate is another helpful upgrade. Just ensure you get Deadbolt and increased door health and resistance




WAR Empire SymbolKeep Attack Tactics

Outer Wall

  • Make sure each group in the warband is balanced with the right classes, at least try to make sure you have 2 healers in each group
  • 1 warband on the outer door, 4 tanks on Ram with dedicated healer(s) and 1 or 2 ranged DPS parties for disrupting the enemy on the walls.
  • The remaining parties and warbands should guard the rear, and posterns heavily, to stop any defenders getting in. On postern duty it is important to stop the enemy getting close to the keep walls, this will prevent their healers rezzing their dead to the battlements.

Bloody SunInner Keep Door

Same as above but:

  • The warbands on postern duty need to guard close to the outer postern doors and not the main keep postern (inside the outer wall of course). The enemy needs to be stopped before they get near enough to the keep to be rezzed.

Bloody SunIf the Lord Room is Heavily defended:

  • Use your morale abilities wisely, make sure you have number 4 saved for the Lord room push.
  • Wait in the room below and build your morale 4 abilities, everyone needs to know the tanks will go 1st, followed by DPS then ranged and healers. Effective AoE healers can stay till the push was successful, as your heals reach to the lord room above. But get up once there is an opportunity.
  • Someone needs to start a countdown (make sure the champions have been recently dispatched so they don’t spawn on the healers after the tanks charge).
  • Now the army should charge popping morale 4, and must keep running, even if you think you’re stuck just keep trying, as you and the rest, will get through with enough jumping and wiggiling.

Bloody SunHigh Rank Keeps

Same advice as for normal keeps but you must make sure the champions are kept off the squishes

Alternative Keep Siege Methods:

You may, depending on the status of other zones, enemy numbers, or keep rank, adopt another tactic suitable to your current situation.

  • Absolute keep door nuke – everyone DPS the door (for example if you know the enemy are busy elsewhere and you need to get in a dead-bolted keep as fast as possible)
  • Renown Rank 45 Melee DPS can use an ability to pick undead-bolted keep doors and gain entry. (if you have enough melee DPS you can take a keep very fast)

This is something that should constantly be assessed to ensure you are sieging a keep in the most effective way considering the circumstances.

WAR Empire SymbolKeep Defense Tactics

  • Make sure each party in the warband is balanced with the right classes, try to ensure you have 2 healers in each party. I always find it good for defense, when you have too little or too many healers, to make 1 or 2 strong tank/healer mix only parties for the tank wall.
  • If your tank wall holds you will win, so make sure your tanks have dedicated healers.
  • Any Renown Rank 45 tanks need to repeatedly Bulwark the keep door (ability that repairs keep doors)
  • Keep the Oil up (as long as you repair after every fire this should not be a problem)
  • A great tactic is to have a couple of strike parties, or even a warband, that repeatedly rushes out from keep door to counter-attack the attackers. You aim is to drop their Ram, healers and disrupt their attack on the door. Use this tactic well and you will rout the enemy and repel many keep attacks.

With the addition of the second, wider ramp leading to the Keep Lord Room the standard “Lord room” defense is, in my opinion, far from the best option. Personally I feel great alternative is to:

  • Defend the ground floor.
  • Get the tank wall blocking the Keep Door Entrance, AoE melee behind tank wall, ranged DPS and healers on stairs with any close combat DPS waiting to take down anyone who gets to the healers.
  • You also need a small team on the oil with a dedicated healer (tip: if you’re on the oil REPAIR after every fire).
  • Keep the oil up and when the door goes keep it constantly pouring on the attackers, if the tank wall holds them, the full DPS and Burning Oil combo will inflict uber death on your foes.




WAR Empire SymbolImportant Fortress Tactics

(Fortresses have been removed as of game version 1.3.2. I will leave this information here as the game is a lot less fun after this change. Hopefully fortresses will return as a major part of teir 4 campaign progression very soon)

If Numbers allow:

  • Have a force waiting outside the Fortress to lead the second attack if the 1st strike fails
  • Have a warband or 2 killing enemy reinforcements and protecting ours

Bloody SunFortress Siege Tips:

  • Make sure each group in the warband is balanced with the right classes, try to ensure you have 2 healers in each party.
  • You need one person calling the shots (It happens too often; people shout out in region and cause the attack to split and fail)
  • Kill all the champions and keep them off the squishes.
  • Use your morale abilities wisely, make sure you have Morale 4 for the Lord room push, you will need all the help you can get.
  • Wait in the room below and build your morale 4 abilities, everyone needs to know the tanks will go 1st, followed by DPS then ranged and healers. Effective AoE healers can stay till the push was successful, as your heals reach to the lord room above. But AOE helaers get up at the 1st opportunity, especially since your warband should be charging order on top floor and may get out of range.
  • Someone needs to start a countdown (make sure the champions have been recently dispatched so they don’t spawn on the healers).
  • Now the army should charge popping morale 4, and must keep running, even if you think you’re stuck just keep trying, as you and the rest, will get through with enough jumping and wriggling.
  • The charge should keep momentum and continue past the lord to destroy the defenders on the stairs/top floor (this will allow you to regroup and rez any fallen – as long as you do not keep lord aggro’d)
  • Do not worry about dying, if you don’t charge you’re going to die anyway, so you may aswell go for it
  • Do not Taunt the Lord – you will cause champions to spawn and wipe the attack (this goes for all classes!!)
  • When the Lord is aggro’d you cannot resurrect due to a debuff from the Lord, so it is best if you re-spawn and wait for 2nd or 3rd wave

Bloody SunFortress Defense Tips:

  • Make sure each group in the warband is balanced with the right classes, try to ensure you have 2 healers in each party.
  • Again, a great tactic is to have a couple of strike parties, or even a warband, that repeatedly rushes out from the Fortress to counter-attack the attackers. You aim is to drop their Ram, healers and disrupt their attack on the door. Use this tactic well and you will rout the enemy and repel many attacks
  • Renown Rank 45 tanks need to repeatedly Bulwark the Fortress door
  • Keep the Oil up (as long as you repair after every fire this should not be a problem)

Bloody SunDefending the Lord:

I go against the norm on this one. I still recommend defending in the Lord room itself, but on the ramp leading to the Quartermaster NPC level, instead of blocking the top of the ramp leading to the lord room. This benefits the defense by making the enemy fight both the lord and champs at the same time as the defenders. Works very well if you are out numbered. Specifically, the set up would be:

  • Get the tank wall blocking the bottom of the ramp leading to the room above Fortress Lord. AoE melee behind tank wall, ranged DPS and healers at top stairs with any close combat DPS waiting to take down anyone who gets through to the healers.

(Note. It is still an effective and viable option to defend the ramp entrance to the Lord room)
